Pictures from Vernazza, in the Cinque Terre

Vernazza is in the "Cinque Terre" region, on the northwest coast of Italy. This is the view from our hotel balcony.

Our inn was rustic, built into a mountain wall. It had an outside shower...

... and some of the rocks on the wall it was built against poked through the bathroom wall. The part of the bathroom that was inside, that is.

Speaking of rustic bathrooms, here's a "Turkish Toilet," also known as a "squat toilet," that was in the train station at La Spezia, on the way to Vernazza. These used to be common in Europe, now they're rare.

Well, time to get our minds out of the toilet. Here's the view of our hotel from near the church in the first picture at the top of the page. Note the white shower curtain (from the second picture on this page) waving in the breeze, top left..

Vernazza is built right into the rock walls of a canyon that flows out of the Apuan Alps into the Ligurian Sea, part of the Mediterranean.

It's full of very steep "streets," like this stairway here...

...and here...

... narrow walkways that lead to...

...scenic vistas.

The tower of the 15th century castle. The whole town is kind of like a castle, with all the little passageways and stairs everywhere.

Very medieval.

Sunset on the Ligurian Coast.

The first night we had dinner in a beautiful restaurant on top of the hill above our hotel.
